Take the Five for Five Birthday Challenge!
Guess what? Aura’s House is going to be FIVE years old on June 30, 2009! Join our celebration by considering donating $5 to one or all FIVE of our current projects that aim to help needy families in Africa, Central America, South America, and Asia. You can also help by emailing at least FIVE of your family or friends that you think would be interested in helping a family that will never be able to repay them.
Back in the olden days of 2003 (before the site launched) my only goal was to raise $4500 to build my sponsored child (now age 15) a safe and sturdy brick home to replace the shaky mud hut her and her family were living in. My goal was met in November of 2004 and now as of today’s post, Aura’s House has six partners who help run the site, volunteers, and has raised a total of $60, 555! That’s over $12,000 a year since we started. I know it’s small potatoes compared to big charities and foundations like the Bill Gates Foundation… but it’s something, and one way regular people can help make a difference. View our Past Projects to see what we’ve accomplished over the last five years.
Coincidentally, I always had Aura’s birthday listed by Children International in my sponsorship materials as June 6th. It wasn’t until 2006 when I met her and her family in Guatemala in their new brick home that I learned her actual birthday is on June 30… the same day I launched the site in 2004. Strange but true. As Aura’s House turns five next month, Aura Yesenia Solis Hernandez will also turn Sweet 16!
Thanks to all for your support of this site over the years and for helping us purchase (among all the other projects) Aura a new home, furniture, desks for her elementary school in her village, and most recently, Aura’s tuition so she may attend high school and fulfill her dream of becoming a teacher.
What a difference all those small donations and five years makes! Shall we try for another five?
