Aura’s House Newsletter: Fall 2010
Latest News, Spreading the Word, Our Recently Completed Projects, Liberia Documentary, and Heather’s New Baby Niko
Hello there Aura’s House Community,
We hope you are having a wonderful Fall and are enjoying this time of year when change is in the air.
We’ve been busy as usual over here at Aura’s House. A number of projects have recently been completed. (Thanks Donors!) Just in are photos of Jessibel Bajada of Manila, the Philippines with the household items made possible by your donations. Through our current projects, we also continue to try to help children lift themselves out of poverty by helping them get access to an education in The India Tuition Project and give a poor family in Ecuador a much needed lift through the The Household Needs Project for Maria Chancay.
We’ve recently received some very good news about Aura and her progress as she studies to become a teacher in Guatemala, as well as some terrible news regarding the father of one of our project recipients, Ana Gomez of Ecuador. Ana’s father, Luis Lema, who received an Electrical Workshop made possible by your donations, unexpectedly passed away in late July. We are working together with Ana’s sponsor Stephanie and Children International to see how Aura’s House can best help this family in their time of need.
Please read on and visit the site to see what else we’ve been up to. As always, we welcome your comments and feedback and continue to look for a few good volunteers that would like to help us achieve our goals. If this is you, please drop us an email at: info (at) aurashouse.com.
Best wishes and Happy Fall!
Kristen, Ana, Mike, Christina, Heather, Courtenay, and the Aura’s House Team
The India Tuition Project aims to raise $2450 to pay tuition fees for 100 children in Kolkata, India. That’s $24.50 per child. Aura’s House donors have raised $1325 so far (as of October 14, 2010) making it possible to send 53 children to school. Aura’s House particularly enjoys giving the gift of education because of the long term benefits a child with an education can pass on to their community.
The Household Needs Project for Maria Chancay is just starting out at $35 raised. We aim to raise $375 for the following gifts: a bed, mattress, chest of drawers, table, chairs, and a blender.
Past Projects – Much Progress Made and Photos
So far this year, Aura’s House has completed a number of projects including an Emergency Project for Diego ($2174 Raised)
Diego needed help right away to help with medical issues and has limited income as his parents are deceased. We hope to bring peace and comfort to Diego and his caretaker, his aunt. See photos of Diego with some of his gifts including a new bed and mattress.
At Aura’s House, some of our favorite projects are income generating projects such as Maria Antonia’s Tortilla Making Business. Our donors have supplied Maria with the tools to sustain an income. Maria will operate her business from a rental that is close to her home and she has also secured the help of her cousin in addition to her grandmother. They will make fresh tortillas three times a day, as this is a staple of the Guatemalan diet.
Another income generating project was completed just last week. This Hog Raising Project was for John (6) of the Philippines. Aura’s House raised $700 for three hogs, feed sacks, and contingencies. John’s grandfather already owns a pigpen. In addition, donations went toward supplying John with clothing, footwear, and groceries.
Also of the Philippines, Jessabel Bajada was supplied with $350 for her Household Needs Project. Aura’s House raised money for the following gifts: home repair materials, grocery items, a plastic clothes drawer, a kerosene stove, kitchenware, school shoes, rubber shoes, an electric fan, rice, meal expenses, and transportation expenses.

Partner’s Corner: Kristen’s Liberia Documentary Featured and Welcome Baby Niko
Aura’s House’s Kristen Palana made a documentary that looks at the aftermath of Liberia’s civil war and the impact that a simple school meal can have on young children and their families. It is now being shown on The UN’s World Food Programme’s Youtube Channel and is also available at their Facebook and Twitter sites.
Welcome to the newest Aura’s House baby, little Niko! Niko is the son of AH Partner Heather LaBonte Efthymiou who originally comes from California. His daddy is Costas Efthymiou who is originally from Cyprus. The family is currently living in Bristol, UK.
