OK. I asked for Aura’s House bloggers, but I’ll start. Ahem! (clears throat…)

My name is Kristen. I am (gulp) 34 years-old. I teach Digital Media (animation, web design, interactive design, video, and graphic design) at The American University of Rome In Rome, Italy. I originally come from Swansea, Massachusetts. I have a wonderful husband, Michael who is originally from Berlin, Germany. He works at The World Food Programme and gets to help feed starving people around the world as his full time day job. We have a 15 month-old son named Lukas.

Lukas just before Christmas, 2010.

In 2003 I began setting up this site to help raise $4500 to buy a safe, sturdy brick home for my sponsored child, Aura Yesenia Solis Hernandez of Guatemala. Since our goal was met in November of 2004, we decided to launch other small projects that bring big changes to the lives of families in developing countries.

Today I am in my office. Besides updating Aura’s House and trying to round up our community online to share stories, I am working on a new animation called “Veggie Propaganda.” The animation, set to be complete some time in 2011, is a quirky sing-song animation that puts a spotlight on our relationship to animals, their rights, and the benefits of eating less meat. I’ll be exhibiting some in-progress as well as some past work at The 23rd Annual Society for Animation Studies conference, set to be held in Athens, Greece on March 18-20, 2011. Read more about it, if you’d like… My goal for today is to finish coloring in a scene of a cow who has just “laid” a glass of milk.

I also am working on a new course that I created and am offering for the first time for the Spring 2011 semester. It’s called Media, Art, and Social Activism. It’s definitely my cup of tea. Hope the students will be into it as well.

Well, that’s about all I have time to write for today. Until we meet again…

Ciao from Rome!

Kristen

BTW. I really do not have some sort of ego problem that I felt the urgent need to feature myself. 🙂 I was just trying to coax a few of you (perhaps in vain) to share a little something about yourselves. Peace out.
