100% of Donations go to Our Projects, and Other Reasons Why We’re Special

2 March 2011 No Comment

Every now and then I make the mistake of comparing Aura’s House to one of the big charities or non-profit organizations with hundreds of staff members in place and elaborate annual operating budgets, and I think to myself, “Wow. We are so tiny. What difference can we make?”

But then, that has always been the point of Aura’s House; to show that one person can make a difference, that small donations add up to make a big impact.
________

So, in honor of that spirit I give you a list of why Aura’s House is so gosh-darned special, lest there be any doubt that we are. 🙂

1. More Bang for Your Buck.
100% of donations go to our projects. How do we do it? The site is run solely by volunteers. The web hosting and expenses for running the site are donated. We piggyback off larger organizations like Children International who provide us valuable logistical support and forward 100% of Aura’s House funds raised directly to the needy families. They also provide photos and text updates. Also, thanks to them, all donations are 100% US Tax Deductible. Our payment page is integrated directly into Children International’s secure site and Paypal is also accepted. Frankly, (to be a bit cheesy), they are the wind beneath our wings and we thank them vigorously for it.

2. We’re Lean and Mean. (OK. Maybe not Mean...)
All our efforts go towards raising funds for needy families and nothing else.
Meaning, we don’t worry about payroll, annual budgets, and expensive marketing campaigns. We don’t “spend money to make money” with Google Adwords or by contracting for-profit companies who promise to deliver “x” number of new donors for “x” number of dollars.  We’ll leave that to the large charities. That said, if you like what we do, please tell others! People know about us through the Grapevine and via Word of Mouth.

3. We Set a Great Example for Future Generations of Collaborators.
Nobel Peace Prize Committee, take note: We are a site with no particular religious affiliation that helps children from many backgrounds, life-situations, and who have differing beliefs, customs, and cultures. The volunteers who currently run Aura’s House are Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Agnostic Secular Humanist, and Atheist. We’re big fans of respect, tolerance, and working together for the common good.

4. Passion!
Are we dedicated or just crazy?
Maybe both. We volunteers run the site and everything that this entails for no money and all in our free time. We all work full time jobs already and some of us are also parents. We volunteers have one thing in common though: hectic lives but still the desire to help others.

5. Our Ripple Effect is Nothing to Sneeze At.
Something so small can start to have a larger impact. Can we be immodest for a moment? (Too late.)  Aura’s House has inspired similar websites, projects, and initiatives where seemingly huge, insurmountable global problems are broken down into small-scale doable projects that help change lives, one family at a time. Since our site launched in 2004, countless Aura’s House donors have gone on to sponsor their own children through Children International and other organizations. They have gone on to fund raise for other needy children both through our site and beyond. Aura’s House helps those who benefit from our small projects as well as those helping to run those projects.

Yay us! OK. Back to being modest. Back to work..

Best wishes,
Kristen and The Aura’s House Team
