Heather and Trixie the Kitten
The wonderful Heather Autumn LaBonte Efthymiou of Aura’s House took a few minutes out of her busy day of child-rearing, animal advocacy, and being an all around do-gooder to answer a few interview questions of ours. Thanks Heather!
1. Please tell us where you are from, where you live, and what you do on a typical day at this moment in your life.
I am an American living in Cyprus (a small island under Turkey). I am a stay-at-home mom to a 20 month-old little boy. I spend my days taking care of my wonderful son, Niko, taking our caged neighbor dog out for exercise, trying to find homes for dogs here in Cyprus, and trying to keep my house presentable.
2. Why do you think you are drawn to trying to help people you have never met before?
I have always liked helping people since I was a small child. My mom always went above and beyond in her role as a special education teacher so maybe that rubbed off on me a bit! I care about giving children a chance in life no matter where they are from.
3. How and when did you become involved with Aura’s House? What has been your most gratifying moment working with Aura’s House?
I found out about Aura’s House on a Yahoo sponsor page many years ago. I got my two sponsor children on the waiting list. While I was waiting for their project to come up I did what I could to spread the word about Aura’s House. I used to post on Craig’s List all of the time for them until I was no longer able to because of filters Craig’s List put on that prevent people outside of the USA posting on the USA site. (WE NEED VOLUNTEERS IN THE US TO POST ON CRAIGS LIST FOR US- please contact me at heather4aurashouse (at) live.co.uk if you can do this once a week). I was soon asked to be a partner. I can’t pick a most gratifying moment because they all are. I love when I see that families and children are being helped and I feel so happy when each project is funded!
4. What other interests do you have and/or what other causes do you care about?
I love watching TV shows like CSI, Law and Order SVU and such. I also like to read. I help out many animal welfare organizations and groups here in Cyprus who save animal’s lives daily. I also send post to seriously ill children in the UK through a program called Post Pals
5. What would you like to say to the Aura’s House Community?
Thank-you so much to everyone who donates to Aura’s House projects and helps spread the word about Aura’s House! Really, you make so many dreams come true for poor children and families. We really appreciate everything you do!
