This project was urgent.  Mario’s new term of school began in March of 2013. Since we reached our goal of $450 by January 30, 2013 he was able to attend. In order to be prepared to start the term, he needed to be able to pay for the expenses of his mandatory school uniform and educational supplies. With your donations, we sent Mario to reach his educational dreams by raising funds for those supplies. We aimed to raise $450 in total for a school uniform including pants, t-shirts, a track suit, sweater, socks, a backpack, pencil case, CD player, English language CD’s, and additional school supplies. All projects on the Aura’s House site are 100% US tax deductible.

Mario is the sponsor child of Barbara R. of Vancouver, Canada.

Barbara writes:

“Mario is a very bright, eleven year old boy who lives north of Valparaiso in Chile. He has a charming personality and infectious smile. Mario studies hard at school and gets excellent grades. Unfortunately, his parents are separated and now only his mother supports Mario and his sister, Javiera, in a rented home which takes up much of the income that she earns as a seasonal agricultural worker. The family lives in a rural area where the main occupation available is picking potatoes and other produce for a short period each year. If Mario cannot rise above poverty through a better education and stand out amongst other applicants for a better type of occupation, he will most likely become an agricultural worker in the future.

The knowledge of English is an important extra skill and one that Mario states that he desires to learn in nearly every one of his letters. Recently, his mother has been showing significantly less interest in furthering Mario’s education. Also, the Children International center is too far away from his home to attend classes. I believe that the best alternative would be to provide him with a combination radio, tape and C.D. player so that he can learn English through educational C.D.’s and tapes. Songs in English will help attune his ear to a different language. These along with the mandatory school uniforms and supplies will greatly help Mario’s education.”
