Featured Person: Elvis Mwenda Kibiti
“My name is Elvis Kibiti. Most people call me “elvo” though, a nickname derived from my first name or “Mwenda”, my middle name. I am from Meru, Kenya currently living in Shanghai and splitting half of my time in China and the other half in San Francisco where I work as a Product Designer in the consumer electronics space.
My favorite thing to do is travel, I try and see at least 5 new countries every year though lately I have been getting into a pattern of visiting my more favorite countries in lieu of new ones with Colombia and Thailand topping the list. I also like to play team sports mostly basketball and indoor soccer. I played table tennis a lot in high school. At my best I was one of the top 20 under 17 players in Kenya.
I got involved in Aura’s House in 2005. I had shortly graduated from college and I was trying to get into “giving back” as much as I could. I had a great mentor in college, Lavinia Boykin, who really got me focused on caring about others and helping out the less fortunate be it academically, financially or by simply being there. I found the website through a web search and told my friend about it the next day. I was super excited and donated very shortly afterwards. My reason for sticking with Aura’s House, to quote past elvo from 2005 verbatim was “I am not interested in donating to an organization where half the money goes towards putting a Picasso on the CEO’s wall”.
I’ve been happy to be a part of Aura’s House and I look forward to being a supporter for many more years. Cheers!”
Elvis has been a hero to a number of children and communities by repeatedly finishing off projects with donations also matched by his employer. His most recent good deed was on Thanksgiving Day 2013 by completing our Guatemala Library Project.
