UPDATE: November 2, 2014.

Students of The American University of Rome (AUR) have come together this semester to create a volunteer club where engaged young people can help bring about positive change in their local and global communities. As their first project, The Volunteer Club, worked to raise funds for The Education Project for Anna Marie, so that this bright young woman from The Philippines will have a chance at staying in University and continuing her education.

The Volunteer Club hosted a bake sale on Tuesday, October 14 from 10am – 4pm in the Garden of The American University of Rome. Leading up to the bake sale, jars were left by the vending machines at AUR’s main campus to encourage people to donate their spare change.  Thanks to their delicious treats, AUR’s Volunteer Club raised a whopping $415 which all but finishes off Anna Marie’s project.

The Education Project for Anna Marie aims to raise a total of $1100 to purchase the following items: tuition, school uniforms, field trip fees, books, meals, and transportation. So far over 90% of this goal has been successfully raised. Anna Marie’s family lives in dire poverty, so any financial assistance she can get to remain in school will not only help her, but also her younger siblings whom she hopes to be able to send to school some day as well.

Anna graduated high school in April 2013 and is now studying Business Management at a state college near her home.

Anna Marie said:

“I would like to become a successful businesswoman. I want to learn about business so when I have my own, I can help my family.”

The Volunteer Club at AUR learned about Aura’s House thanks to the efforts of AUR staff, faculty, and students who have been involved as volunteers for the site since 2006, when Aura’s House founder Kristen Palana started working at the University. The club hopes to take on many more activities throughout the semester to assist with many other causes. Aura’s House looks forward to working with the AUR Volunteer Club and we wish them all the best with their worthy goals.
